We’re looking for volunteers who are interested in the project to join the team. No experience is required for any of the roles – we have project volunteers who can show you the ropes and give you hands-on training. And if you don’t know what particular area you’re interested in, but the project intrigues you, then let’s talk. Of course if you’re experienced in a particular area that’s always a good thing. We need volunteers in any of these areas:· Camera Operators, Website and Social Media Volunteers, Hardware and Internet Infrastructure Volunteers. See project website at landingsbirdcam.com

Description

The Dave Scott Bird Trail is a project of Skidaway Audubon that consists of over 200 bird houses, installed on posts with baffles, to provide a safe place for our songbirds to raise their young. Volunteers include Bird Trail monitors and woodworkers. Each week throughout the nesting season (mid-February to early September), trained volunteer monitors check each of the houses, record nesting activities, and address any needed concerns. This monitoring allows us to gather data on the number of nests, eggs, and nestlings, as well as how many of the nestlings fledge. By monitoring regularly, and year to year, adverse changes in breeding success can be spotted before population declines become obvious. As the Trail ages and weathers, repairs and replacements of birdhouses are needed to assure we provide safe nesting places. Experienced volunteer woodworkers build these replacement Trail houses. We supply our preferred birdhouse design plans, wood, and materials.

Members of the Bottle Brigade provide a great service to the residents on Skidaway Island. A volunteer for the Bottle Brigade is expected to cover an assigned route on a road or path either biweekly or once a week using a grabber to pick up all forms of trash. We will strive to find a route that is convenient for you. A volunteer can traverse a route by walking, golf cart or bike. A buddy system is an option. The motto for trash pickers is “if you see it, pick it up”, but only if you can safely do it. Reflective vests are provided. The Bottle Brigade is a dedicated and conscientious group of volunteers. We welcome your assistance.

Tasks consist of weeding, planting, trimming flowers and plants and laying pine straw. Tools are provided. Gardening experience is not needed. This is a great opportunity to learn about which plants grow best in The Landings and attract pollinators, to meet other gardeners, laugh and learn!

This project was launched in 2014 by Skidaway Audubon to seek certification of The Landings as a Sustainable Community by Audubon International. That goal was reached in 2018, in partnership with TLA which made certification a goal in the TLA Strategic Plan. Recertification, completed in 2021, is required every three years. A task force has been recruited to oversee that work for 2024, operating as a TLA subcommittee of the Public Works Department. Recruitment for new members will occur annually through the TLA Committee recruitment process.

The weather stations project is a collaboration between Skidaway Audubon and The TLA Strategic Water Committee. A team of volunteers are working to establish a network of weather stations within The Landings that will provide a real-time and historical view of weather on Skidaway Island at a number of locations. If you’re interested in the subject matter, we would love to talk with you. Installing your own weather station, monitoring one of our current stations, or helping out with the website are all important contributions. And if you happen to have professional experience in the area, in weather, hydrology, or any other associated expertise, we would love to talk with you! See project website at landingsweather.com
